PRINCETON, NJ – St. Francis Brooklyn women's water polo continued its historic start to the 2023 season on Friday evening, defeating Chapman by a score of 17-9 to improve to 8-0 on the season. It is the team's fifth win by over five goals.
Sydney DeVroedt continued her offensive prowess, scoring a season-high eight goals. Teammate Anja Miskovic added four goals and MK McKendry led the defensive unit, contributing five saves.
Chapman started the contest strong, scoring the first three goals. From there, the Terriers rallied to score three of their own to tie it up as DeVroedt scored twice in the span of 1:23. Chapman went on to score once more before St. Francis Brooklyn scored two in a row to make it 5-4 after one quarter.
The Terriers carried momentum into the second and went on to score six straight before Chapman could finally get one back. The stretch proved to be too much to handle as they did not surrender the lead for the rest of the game. Miskovic and DeVroedt combined for five of the six goals.
The score was 11-5 at the half, and the two sides went back-and-forth in the third quarter. Both teams scored three times. The Panthers scored the first goal of the period but two DeVroedt finished stalled any thought at a comeback bid.
St. Francis Brooklyn slammed the door in the final quarter, outscoring Chapman 3-1. Junior Megan Stafford scored the final goal of the game to round out the final score.
Sofia Kolovou scored two goals on just three shots for the Terriers. Mia Leto and Olga Antoniadi had two assists apiece.
Action will resume tomorrow at the Princeton Invitational. The Terriers will face hosts Princeton at 1 p.m. and Villanova at 4 p.m.
