VILLANOVA, PA - St. Francis Brooklyn women's water polo took on nationally ranked LIU on Friday morning for the first time this season. The Terriers turned in a strong first half but relinquished 14 second half goals to fall by a score of 23-13.
LIU had a solid start, jumping ahead 4-2 before the Terriers rallied to tie the score at five after the first quarter of play.
Anja Miskovic scored to cut it to a one-goal deficit before
Sydney DeVroedt tied the game at the 2:35 mark. From there, the Sharks scored to go back ahead but DeVroedt put another one away to tie the score to end the frame.
The story remained similar in the second, as the two sides went back-and-forth. LIU built the first two-goal lead of the quarter at 8-6, but the Terriers scored four of the final five goals to take a 10-9 lead at the break. Miskovic scored a goal with 13 seconds remaining to grab that advanatge.
The Sharks clamped down the defense and scored nine times in the third quarter to lead 18-12 with eight minutes remaining, despite goals by DeVroedt and Miskovic. The fourth quarter saw one final goal by the Terriers, but the Sharks scored five times to cement the victory.
DeVroedt and Miskovic each scored five goals to lead the offense.
Sofia Kolovou added three goals.
Thea Simpson had two steals and two assists.
The Terriers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they face La Salle. Action begins at 2:15.
