Women’s Water Polo Competes in Marist Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The St. Francis Brooklyn women's water polo team completed the Marist Invitational on Sunday when George Washington topped them after a close game. Brown and La Salle bested the Terriers in the first day of the tournament on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn – 5 | Brown – 16
  • The Bears took control of the contest early and went into the halftime break leading the Terriers, 8-0.
  • In the third quarter, the Terriers managed to score three goals, and went into the fourth trailing Brown, 12-4.
  • In the game's final stanza, the Terriers added two more tallies but ultimately were unable to get close to the opponent, who concluded the game with an 11-goal advantage.
  • Kelsey Snelgar registered four goals and an assist, the remaining tally was added by Kirra Hemric, who also had one assist. Nicole Herrick and Julie Olivares both added assists of their own. 
St. Francis Brooklyn – 7 | La Salle – 9
  • La Salle was able to limit St. Francis' offensive attack as it took a 5-1 lead into the halftime break. Snelgar was the first and only Terrier to rattle the opponent's cage in the first half.
  • The Terriers would battle back in the second half as their offense accounted for six scorers. Snelgar added three more tallies for a total of four goals in the game, and swiped three steals.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn's remaining goals were scored by Tate Renata, who also registered six steals, Zoe Drobenko, and Nicole Herrick, who added three assists each.
  • Despite their best effort, the Terriers were unable to catch the Explorers, and the game concluded with a score of 9-7.  
St. Francis Brooklyn – 10 | George Washington – 12
  • In their final game of the Marist Invitational, the Terriers opened up strong as they took a two-goal lead. George Washington was able to knot the game up at 3-3 before the conclusion of the first quarter.
  • The Colonials bested the Terriers in the second quarter (4-2), but St. Francis Brooklyn was able to outscore them in the third (3-1).
  • In the back and forth that ensued, the Colonials ended up on top, overcoming the Terriers 4-2, in the frame ending the game with a two-goal difference in favor of the Colonials.
  • Snelgar scored five goals, registered one assist, and four steals. Nicole Herrick added two goals and two assists.
  • The remaining tallies were added by Kirra Hemric, Erin Gonzalez, and Julie Olivares.
UP NEXT:
The Terriers travel to the West Coast to play in the Pomona Tournament. St. Francis Brooklyn plays a total of four matches out in Claremont, CA, its first will be against Concordia on Saturday, March 2, at 12:30 p.m.
