BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY. - The women's water polo team closed out Alumni Weekend on Sunday, dropping a pair of contests to Iona and LIU.
For the Terriers, it was the second time in three days facing the 23rd ranked Sharks, and while the team held its own in Friday's match, LIU's quality was too much on Sunday evening.
St. Francis Brooklyn 9 | Iona 18
The Terriers kicked off the day with a 10 a.m. start against Iona. The strongest eight minutes for the team came in the third quarter in which they outscored the hosts 4-3.
Six different Terriers found the net during the game, including Anja Miskovic and Tate Renata who each scored twice. Thea Simpson had a team leading four assists.
LIU 23 | St. Francis Brooklyn 14
The Terriers then returned home for a rematch with LIU.
LIU scored the first four goals of the game, and then Sydney Devroedt got the Terriers on the board from the penalty spot. Sofia Kolovou scored with a lob over the keeper with 1:20 left to close the gap to two, and the score was 5-3 LIU after eight minutes played.
LIU took a four point lead in the opening stages of the first quarter. The Terriers scored two straight through Devroedt and Kolovou to make the score 7-5, but the visitors subsequently took a nine point lead with seven unanswered.
In the third quarter, the Sharks increased their lead by one and led 20-10 going into the fourth. After the visitors opened up 12 point lead midway through the fourth, Paula Fernandez Lopez made a great defensive play to deny an LIU player. Devroedt converted a skipping shot from the left hand side of the goal in the last minute of the game, and the final margin was 23-14 LIU. Devroedt finished the game leading all SFBK scorers with seven.
