WEST WINDSOR, NJ – #5 seeded St. Francis Brooklyn took on #4 Saint Francis University in the Northeast Conference quarterfinals on Friday, defeating the Red Flash by a score of 4-2. The Terriers earned the doubles point and took three singles points to advance, where they will face #1 LIU on Saturday.
Winning two of three doubles matches to grab the first point of the match was key as nearly every singles matchup went down to the wire. Lincy Valencia ran away with her matchup to give the Terriers some breathing room and the other two singles winners earned victories in three sets.
SFU won in No. 1 and No. 2 singles to get on the board, but St. Francis Brooklyn secured a key triumph by getting its fourth point.
Both Nicolle Romero and Valentine Mudry won in comeback fashion as they both dropped their opening sets. Similarly, their second sets both went to a tiebreak and the duo managed to each push their opponent to a final frame and ran away with a win (Romero took the last set 6-0, Mudry won 6-1).
Julia Varvarigos was in the middle of the third set when the Terriers clinched their bid to the semifinal and her match remained unfinished.
St. Francis Brooklyn faces the top overall seed on Saturday. The start time will be pushed up an hour due to impending rain. The match will begin not before 11:30 a.m.
