Swimming & Diving Wraps Up First Meet of Season

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – The St. Francis Brooklyn men and women's swimming and diving programs concluded its first meet of the season on Saturday. The Brooklyn Invite was a two-day event; the first day of competition was hosted on the campus of St. Francis Brooklyn in the SFC Aquatic Center. Day two took place on LIU Brooklyn's campus in the Steinberg Wellness Center.
 
The Terriers had many standout performances in the meet, highlighted by freshman diver Kayla McKenzie setting a new program record in the 1-meter dive. The freshman recorded a mark of 213.83 through six dives on the first day of the meet.
 
St. Francis Brooklyn's women's team knocked off Manhattan in head-to-head competition, 217-82. LIU Brooklyn edged the Terriers' women's team by a score of 153-142. The men's team fell to Manhattan in a dual meet, 210.50-91.50.
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The 200-yard medley relay team of Tina Childress, Raphaelle Gregoire, Beatriz Gomes Angelo, and Jovana Terzic earned a first-place finish to begin day one of the meet. They compiled a time of 1:50.08 for the Terriers.
  • In the 500-yard freestyle event, the Terriers had three student-athletes finish in the top five. Gomes Angelo was victorious with a time of 5:09.84. Ana Paula Montes Deoca Zapiain came in third (5:13.94), while Rebeca Tapia came in fourth (5:23.01).
  • Childress recorded a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.23. Terzic had a strong third-place effort as she clocked a time of 25.35.
  • McKenzie notched a score of 213.83 in the 1-meter dive to set a St. Francis Brooklyn school record. The freshman later posted a mark of 207.10 in the 3-meter dive.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Terzic, Angelina Gonzalez, Melanie Lumkong, and Childress earned a second-place finish (3:41.80).
  • Gomes Angelo picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle. She posted a score of 1:58.17 to take home gold. Her time was .60 second quicker than Amanda Peren from LIU. She later notched a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.55).
  • The Terriers duo of Gregoire (1:06.82) and Fanny Stromstedt (1:08.75) placed first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke. The tandem would go on to take the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke as well. Stromstedt (2:27.18) came in first followed by Gregoire (2:29.08).
  • Montes Deoca Zapiain was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.87. 
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Alfred Christensson, Binald Mahmuti, William Lapkin, and Andrew Gubarev finished in first for the Terriers with a time of 3:16.03.
  • Mahmuti (1:49.48) and Jonas Veazey (1:50.73) earned first and second-place finishes respectively in the 200-yard freestyle.
  • The Terriers' 200-yard medley relay team of Christensson, Kavin Duraku, Mahmuti, and Lapkin earned a second-place finish (1:38.67).
  • Veazey came in second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.83.
  • Noah Thompson, Lapkin, and Matheus Santos finished in the top five of the 50-yard freestyle. Thompson (22.69) was tied for second, Lapkin (22.73) placed fourth, while Santos came in fifth (22.96).
  • Gubarev (2:01.58) earned second-place in the 200 yard IM. He also came in second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.57). Christensson also had himself a second-place finish with a time of 2:05.65 in the 200-yard backstroke.
  • In the final event of the meet, the Terriers' 200-yard freestyle relay team made up of Christensson, Micah Wesselhoff, Lapkin, and Gubarev came in second as they clocked a score of 1:29.59

The St. Francis Brooklyn swimming and diving teams are back in action on Saturday, October 20, when they compete at Iona.
