Victory Over Top Ranked Commodores Highlights 3-2 Day For Terrier Bowlers

MILLSBORO, DE - The St. Francis Brooklyn women's bowling team returned to action after being idle last weekend, competing at the Hawk Classic Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, on Friday at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Delaware.  Today's action consisted of five-game total pinfall Baker format matches, and the Terriers won three of their five matches, including a thriller against the top-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches' Association national rankings, the Vanderbilt University Commodores.

St. Francis Brooklyn 931, Kutztown University 808
The Terriers found themselves trailing by 10 pins after the first game of the five-game match with the Golden Bears, but were able to turn the match around over the next four games, highlighted by a 209 in game three, to post a convincing win.  The Terriers opened only one frame in each of the last two games of the match.  Sophomore Heather Waters filled nine of her ten frames during the match to lead the Terriers in the filled frame department.

St. Francis Brooklyn 963, Vanderbilt University 961
St. Francis took command of their match with Vanderbilt in the early stages, as a 213 in game one and a 233 in game three built a 70 pin advantage.  The nation's top ranked team stormed back in game four, cutting the lead to six, and junior Kimmi D'Ottavio's 29-pin tenth frame was necessary to keep St. Francis in the lead.  Having the lead going to the final game was important, as the left lane was playing better than the right lane, so having that choice helped in the close outcome.  The fifth game was a nail-biter, with the Terriers putting together a turkey (senior Taylor Smith, junior Victoria Doto and junior Lexis Ortiz) starting in frame six, followed by spares from sophomore Taylor Waglione and D'Ottavio to close out the game with a 194 score.  Waglione had a clean match, and D'Ottavio filled nine of ten frames, with a pair of anchor-frame doubles.

St. Francis Brooklyn 954, Long Island University 910
The Terriers defeated the Sharks to improve to 3-0 on the day.  After an inauspicious beginning with a pair of open frames, St. Francis posted strikes in six of the next seven frames en route to a 214 in the opening game.  That was followed by a 202 which gave the Terriers a 64-pin lead, and three solid games to conclude the match kept the Sharks away from a possible comeback.  Ortiz rolled a clean match in the Terrier winning effort.

Sacred Heart University 949, St. Francis Brooklyn 914
After falling behind early in the day's fourth match against the Pioneers of Sacred Heart, the Terriers rallied with scores of 197 and 203 in games 3 and 4, finding themselves with a 19 pin lead going to the final game of the encounter.  However, a trio of splits by the Terriers in game five turned the match around in Sacred Heart's favor.  Waglione filled nine of her ten frames during the match.

Lincoln Memorial University 909, St. Francis Brooklyn 898
The Terriers trailed by 63 pins after four games before staging a furious comeback with a 203 day-closer.  However, the rally fell 11 pins short.  Once again, Ortiz rolled a clean match for St. Francis.
