Terriers Top Defending NCAA Champions En Route To 4-1 Showing

EGG HARBOR, NJ - The St. Francis Brooklyn women's bowling team returned to the lanes on Friday for the first of three days at the Monmouth University Hawk Flight Invite, contested at King Pin Lanes in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.  During the day, which featured five quint Baker format matches, St. Francis captured four victories, including a win in the day's penultimate match over the defending NCAA Champions, the Vanderbilt University Commodores.

St. Francis Brooklyn 925, Youngstown State University 916
The Terriers opened the tournament with a close victory over the Penguins of Youngstown State University, courtesy of clean games in the first (203) and fourth (209) games of the match.  Sophomore Lexis Ortiz and freshman Taylor Waglione both filled nine of ten frames during the match.  St. Francis withstood a comeback bid by the Penguins in the final game, when Waglione struck in the ninth frame and sophomore Kimmi D'Ottavio rolled a double in the tenth.

St. Francis 905, Felician University 865
A single open frame 203 in game two and a clean 204 in game three lifted the Terriers to the second win of the day, topping the Falcons of Felician by 40 pins.  Waglione rolled a clean match, while D'Ottavio and freshman Heather Waters filled nine of ten frames.

St. Francis 936, Norfolk State University 788
A game two 200, capped by a four-bagger by Waters, freshman Victoria Hollywood, Waglione and D'Ottavio starting in the seventh frame was the high mark in the Terriers' dominating win over the Spartans.  Waglione, Hollywood and Ortiz all filled nine of ten frames.

St. Francis 955, Vanderbilt University 933
The Terriers' 22 pin win over the defending national champions from Vanderbilt was the high point of the afternoon.  Waglione moved to the anchor position and proceeded to double in the tenth frame in both the first and fifth games, as well as rolling fifth-frame strikes in all five games, four of them following fourth-frame strikes by Hollywood.  The Terriers needed all of their strike strings, as the margin of victory was a mere 22 pins in this match.  Waglione was clean in all ten frames.

Sam Houston State University 928, St. Francis 864
Despite a 216 in game two and a 220 to wrap up the match, the Terriers came up short of a perfect day against the Bearkats by 64 pins.  Waglione filled nine of ten frames for St. Francis.

UP NEXT:
Competition continues on Saturday with five traditional team matches.  The Terriers will face LIU-Brooklyn in a position round to begin the day, followed by scheduled matches against LIU-Post, Bloomfield College, Caldwell University and Wilmington (Delaware) University.
