BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Francis Brooklyn women's bowling team took part in a lecture and class on self-defense at Gene Dunn's Karate in Brooklyn last month. The Safe and Sound Project ran by Shihan Michelle Gay was presented to the public for free.
Shihan Michelle Gay is a fifth degree Black Belt and five-time World Oyama Knockdown Champion who donated her time to teach the community.
The team learned how to execute basic self-defense techniques and how to assess situations.
Sophomore,
Lexis Ortiz stated: "The experience was eye-opening and taught me several techniques that I can use if I am ever in a harmful situation."
Shihan Michelle taught the team always to be aware of their surroundings while Shihan Gene Dunn taught them how to break away if someone were to grab them or pick them up without their consent.
Heather Waters, a freshman on the team stated: "I learned a lot of information I did not know before. At first, I had no background on self-defense, but I am glad the team went and gained the information and techniques to use if necessary."
The team practiced the moves on each other and felt they are now better prepared to protect themselves in a bad situation.
