Women’s Basketball Drops Non-Conference Matchup with UMBC

Terriers fall 64-59, led by Fisher’s 19 points

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – St. Francis Brooklyn women's basketball hosted America East foe UMBC Sunday afternoon, dropping a 64-59 decision to the Retrievers. The Terriers led for periods in the second half but were unable to keep pace down the stretch and fell to 1-4 on the season.

Alyssa Fisher led the way with 19 points, making three shots from long distance. Sheridan Kavanagh was the team's other double-digit scorer, notching 12 points. Tyra Myers and Ella Ogier added nine points apiece.

UMBC opened the contest on a 14-7 run, despite Fisher scoring five early points. The Terriers responded, tying the score at 14 before the Retrievers scored a final basket to take a 16-14 lead after one.

St. Francis Brooklyn opened its largest lead of the contest at 26-20 following a three-pointer by Kavanagh but were outscored 12-6 the rest of the way to go into the half tied at 32.

Despite relinquishing a run to end the half, the Terriers opened the third quarter with another lead. A jumper made by Fisher made it 40-36 before the remainder of the frame went back-and-forth. A three-pointer by UMBC made it 47-44 in favor of the visitors with 20 seconds remaining before two Myers free-throws brought the deficit to one point.

Kavanagh gave St. Francis Brooklyn its last lead of the game at 51-49, but a small run by UMBC proved to be the difference. The game was tied twice late but the Retrievers hit their free throws down the stretch. Two free throws with just over a second left effectively ended the game and finalized the 64-59 finish.

Sarah Bandoma had a season-high 11 rebounds for the Terriers.

St. Francis Brooklyn will hit the road for a non-conference tilt at Boston University on Wednesday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
