Women’s Basketball Breezes Past Old Westbury 81-15

Fisher, Januszewska lead Terriers as 12 players get on the scoresheet

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – St. Francis Brooklyn women's basketball held a lead from wire-to-wire in an impressive 81-15 win over Old Westbury Monday afternoon at Daniel Lynch Gymnasium. The Terriers started and finished the contest in style, outscoring the Panthers 46-1 in the first and fourth quarters.

"I'm proud of our effort tonight," head coach Linda Cimino said. "We came out pushing the pace offensively and scored well in transition. I thought we did a great job sharing the ball and was proud of our defensive effort."

Senior Alyssa Fisher and freshman Katie Januszewska led the way with 15 points apiece. Tyra Myers (11 points) and Ella Ogier (10 points) also scored in double figures. Fisher had a game-high five assists and did not commit a turnover. As a team, the Terriers outrebounded the Panthers 48-28.

Causing turnovers in three of Old Westbury's first five possessions, St. Francis Brooklyn (1-0 overall) took a 7-0 lead. That advantage ballooned to a 20-0 lead before the Panthers scored their first point on a free throw. Fisher was strong in the first, scoring nine points.

The visitors battled in the second quarter, but the Terriers still managed to outscore them 11-6 to take a 33-7 lead at the break.

Things started to flow easier for St. Francis Brooklyn in the third quarter, as the team was beginning to handle the Panther 2-3 zone with ease. A 12-0 run to end the period continued straight through the fourth quarter and the game ended with 36 straight points for the Terriers. Eszter Varga, Myers and Januszewska combined for 15 of the 24 points scored in the final 10 minutes.

The defense held Old Westbury to 18.4% shooting from the field and 0-13 from three-point land. Fisher led the way with four steals and Sarah Bandoma added two blocks.

St. Francis Brooklyn will hit the road for a matchup with St. John's Friday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
