STONY BROOK, NY – The St. Francis Brooklyn women's basketball team (6-6) fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves (11-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers have not suffered three consecutive defeats in a full calendar year (December 29 vs. LIU Brooklyn, January 6 vs. Saint Francis University, and January 8 vs. Robert Morris University)
Getting things started just seven seconds into the contest, Australian junior guard
Jade Johnson hit a long triple from the right wing to put the Terriers ahead nice and early 3-0.
Not a lot could be done in the latter portion of the first quarter as the Stony Brook Seawolves were able to complete a 15-2 run within eight minutes. Back and forth action continued with the bench of St. Francis outscoring Stony Brook 7-2.
Alex Tudor contributed a couple in the first quarter.
After falling behind 40-26 in the first half, the Terriers buckled down on defense and revamped into an offensive machine. St. Francis managed to outscore the Seawolves 41-34 in the second half. Graduate guard
Dominique Ward scored 14 points in the third quarter to put the Terriers within 11.
On the flip side for the opposition, the Terriers needed to put a handle on the 72 shots that they were faced with. Seawolves guard Shania Johnson converted on 10-of-25 shots from the field, that gave her 28 points on the day and eight assists.
In the fourth quarter, the Terriers were millimeters away from regaining the lead in the game by converting on their free throws. Roughly halfway into the final stanza of the contest, the Terriers managed to narrow the lead down to two with 4:27 to go. St. Francis could not hold on to the lead as they fell in a heartbreaker to Stony Brook by seven in the final four minutes of the game.
Positive outlooks for St. Francis included
Amy O'Neill inching closer to 300 points as she came one point shy of the accolade for the Australian senior captain. Sophomore
Abby Anderson captured 200 career points in her young career by scoring eight, and getting points number 200 and 201 on the day.
St. Francis and Stony Brook both scored 32 points in the paint. The Terriers won the battle on second-chance opportunities as they outscored the Seawolves 18-8 in that category. St. Francis also managed to tally 32 bench points in today's contest.
Linda Cimino's squad shot 24-of-64 from the field as a team (37.5%) and shot 15-of-20 from the charity stripe in today's contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn – 67 | Stony Brook – 74
• Graduate guard
Dominique Ward tallied 18 points, two steals, eight rebounds, and a block in 28 minutes of action. Ward shot 9-for-19 from the field.
• Junior guard
Jade Johnson scored 11 points, stole three, and contributed a block. The Australian native also contributed two triples from beyond the arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes of play.
• Freshman
Ebony Horton etched 14 points into the scoring column, stole one, and grabbed three rebounds. Horton converted 5-of-7 from the field and netted a lone triple from downtown. Ebony played 32 minutes off the bench.
• Sophomore forward
Ally Lassen scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and contributed an assist in 25 minutes of play.
• Sophomore forward
Abby Anderson grabbed three rebounds, scored eight, and went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. Anderson also scored her 200th career point in today's contest.
