Women's Volleyball Vukasin Petrovic: Athletic Communications Student-Assistant

Volleyball Back At It as They Prepare For Spring Training Tournament

The Terriers' volleyball season ended on November 11th, however,  coach Abra Rummel has been working hard with the women during the spring season training. The number of players has doubled in comparison to last year, and coach Rummel now has a large selection of younger players at her disposal.

Having participated in merely one tournament last year due to vacant positions on the team, the Terriers will travel to Iona to face Iona College, Queens College, and Georgian Court University on March 23rd.
"We only participated in one tournament last year because we only had six players and not a full roster position wise," coach Rummel said. "Right now, I have twelve players returning with all the positions filled out, so I want to take my players to more tournaments. This Friday is a check point for halfway through our spring season training. It's a great opportunity for the girls to see the areas in which they improved in and what areas still need additional work."

Coach Rummel's players are as optimistic as she is. Through team-bonding activities and improved communication, the girls look forward to what is to come.

"I am very excited to play again after so many months to see how much the team has improved physically and mentally," said Wies Hurkmans, a sophomore middle blocker from Overloon, Netherlands. "The team chemistry seems to be much stronger compared to the end of the season through better communication and team bonding activities. Friday (March 23rd) should be a great experience and I believe we can achieve winning results."

This will be the Terriers' first time playing without their former captain Aleksandra Gligoric who, with her 3.97 kills per game in NEC, was named to the First Team All-Northeast Conference squad.

"Aleksandra was a big player: output wise and personality wise. I'm looking to see who on the team will emerge as our court leader to fill the role Aleks has vacated," said coach Rummel.

With a team as young as this, there are many potential players who can step up and fill out the vacant position. One of them is Ally Speweik.

"It feels good to play after a long break because your body feels rejuvenated and ready to get back to work and back into a routine of daily volleyball and lifting practices," claimed Ally, a freshman opposite hitter from Toledo, Ohio. "The expectations regarding Friday's games are just to see how much we've grown and improved over spring season with putting in a lot of hard work in practice and lift, and to see what we still need to improve on in order to be as ready as possible for this upcoming season," she concluded.

There you have it. Tune in after the 23rd to see how our volleyball team is doing. Go Terriers!
