CAMBRIDGE, MA – The St. Francis College Brooklyn men's water polo team dominated the No. 5 seed MIT in the opening round of the 2019 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament. The Terriers defeated the Engineers, 18-8, behind a stellar offensive attack and steady defensive play all day long.
The Terriers took an early advantage that only grew with each passing period, concluding the game with a 10-goal margin of victory. With the win, St. Francis advances to the NWPC Semifinals where it will go head-to-head with the No. 1 seeded Harvard Crimson on Saturday, November 23, at 3 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn – 18 | MIT – 8
- The Terriers opened with fury, courtesy of Matheus Santos scoring back-to-back goals. William Lapkin and Tadeu Rodrigues each scored a single goal in the opening frame as MIT only managed to get on the scoreboard once.
- St. Francis' offensive attack overwhelmed MIT. After a strong second period of play, the Terriers led the Engineers, 8-2, going into the halftime break.
- MIT managed to match the Terriers goal-for-goal in the third period (3-3), so the teams would go on to start the final stanza of the game with the score at 11-5 in favor of St. Francis.
- Finally, by outscoring MIT, 7-3, in the fourth and final period, the Terriers sealed the victory by a final score of 18-8.
- The Terriers offense was led by All-NWPC First Teamer Dominick Hevesi, scorer extraordinaire, with five goals.
- Santos recorded three goals, followed by William Simpson, and Lapkin with two each.
- The remaining goals were a courtesy of Rodrigues, All-NWPC Second Teamer Vladimir Mickic, Ricardo Berenguer, Nikola Nikolic, Zane Drobenko, and Valentin Horvath.
- Stellar defensive play was exhibited by Djordje Stoiljkovic with 14 saves throughout the game.
- With the win, the Terriers improved to 3-0 this season against the Engineers.
