SANTA CLARA, CA – The St. Francis College Brooklyn men's water polo team concluded the Santa Clara Tournament on the West Coast on Sunday afternoon. After picking up a win on Friday over Fresno Pacific, the Terriers earned a spilt on Saturday. St. Francis was topped by California Baptist in the first game on Saturday and then went on to defeat Ottawa University Arizona later in the day.
On Sunday, the Terriers were edged by San Jose State in their final game of the weekend. Ultimately, St. Francis collected a (2-2) record over the course of four matches on the West Coast.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn – 10 | California Baptist University – 11
- Even though the Terriers managed to take an early lead on goals from Ivan Stefanovic, Dominick Hevesi, and Boris Posavec, the Lancers ultimately came back and claimed a lead of their own.
- In an exciting match that saw both teams scoring, CBU held the lead until the brief moment in the third period when Matheus Santos tied the score up.
- After the third frame, CBU controlled a one-goal lead. The Terriers and Lancers traded goals in the fourth quarter as they both rattled the cage three times apiece.
- Stefanovic and Hevesi scored three goals each.
- The remaining tallies were added by Posavec, Vladimir Mickic, Tadeu Rodrigues, and Santos.
St. Francis Brooklyn – 23 | Ottawa – 9
- The Terriers overwhelmed their opponent early on, making the victor clear from the start.
- Senior William Lapkin scored an incredible 10 goals in the contest. It was the most goals he scored in a single-game this season, as well as the most tallies recorded by a Terrier in a game this year.
- Nikola Nikolic added four goals, with William Simpson adding three of his own.
- Zane Drobenko registered two tallies, with the remaining goals scored by Valentin Horvath, Alex Teplitsky, Posavec, and Ricardo Berenguer.
St. Francis Brooklyn – 7 | San Jose State – 12
- The Terriers opened strong, taking the first lead, courtesy of Stefanovic.
- The Spartans quickly returned the favor and then took a lead of their own.
- What ensued was a goal-for-goal game in which the Spartans managed to come out on top by the end of the third period (8-7).
- The Terriers were unable to find their way to the back of the net in the last stanza, whereas the Spartans managed to bypass the Brooklynites defense on four separate occasions, concluding the game at a five-goal difference.
- The Terriers offense was led by Stefanovic with three goals.
- Mickic scored two, while Posavec, and Lapkin each registered a single tally.
