BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – The St. Francis Brooklyn men's water polo team (2-9, 2-1 NEWPC) earned a split of its two home matches on Saturday. The Terriers picked up right where they left off on Wednesday night as they downed the Brown Bears, 12-10, in their first contest of the day.
In the nightcap, No. 7 Harvard narrowly scratched out a win against the Terriers, 15-14, in what was a back and forth contest from the opening sprint.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn – 12 | Brown – 10
- The Terriers knocked off the Brown Bears, 12-10, in the second game of their 2018 NEWPC slate. The win marked the Terriers second-straight after they won their conference opener against Iona on Wednesday evening.
- Freshman defender Djorde Stanic led the Terriers as he scored half the team's goals. Stanic rattled the cage a season-high six times and dished out three assists, which were tied for the team lead. The freshman finished the contest with a match-high six steals. Stanic's most impressive play came at the 2:11 mark in the third quarter. The defender launched a spinning backhanded shot at the net that snuck by the goalkeeper for his fourth tally.
- Junior attacker William Lapkin scored two goals and registered two assists, while fellow junior attacked Matheus Santos also found the back of the net twice for the Terriers.
- Senior defender Nikita Prokhin notched three assists. Junior goalie Viktor Klauzer stopped eight shots and recorded a steal in 32 minutes of action.
- The Terriers trailed 10-9 with 5:22 to play in the match before they went on to close the contest on a 3-0 run en route to the 12-10 victory.
St. Francis Brooklyn – 14 | Harvard – 15
- The SFC Aquatic Center saw a pair of tremendous water polo matches played in its pool on Saturday. The second half of the Terriers' doubleheader featured a highly anticipated meeting with No. 7 Harvard. The Crimson took the match, 15-14, but now without a fight from the Terriers.
- At halftime, Harvard led the Terriers, 7-4, before the Terriers opened up the second half with back-to-back goals. The teams would exchange blows before Harvard went on a critical 3-0 run in the closing minutes of the third quarter. The Terriers put forth a valiant effort, but the Crimson denied the comeback.
- Lapkin was in on nearly every scoring play for the Terriers as the junior totaled four goals and five assists. Two of Lapkin's four goals came off five-meter penalty shots.
- Stanic continued to assert his force in the pool as he scored four more goals and tallied two assists.
- Senior attacker Botond Kadar registered a hat trick, while junior goalie Benedek Molnar made 11 saves in net.
