Men’s Volleyball Topped by NJIT on Saturday

NEWARK, NJ – The St. Francis College Brooklyn men's volleyball team (2-2) fell to NJIT (5-2) in straight sets on Saturday in Newark, NJ. It was the first-ever meeting between the Tri-state area teams as the Terriers continue their inaugural season.
 
NJIT captured a back and forth first set by the final tally of 25-19. After trading points in the early going of the match, the Terriers went on a 5-1 run, which put them ahead 14-11. The Highlanders countered with a 7-1 run of their own and went up 18-15. NJIT expanded its lead and closed the opening set out by outscoring the Terriers, 7-4.
 
The second set saw the teams trade leads and were tied at one point, 10-10. The Highlanders took the lead for good in the set as it went on a 4-0 run, which put them out in front, 14-11. NJIT went on to ultimately take the set, 25-20. Freshman opposite hitter David Vorfi registered five kills in the set for the Terriers, while freshman middle blocker James Henneberry added two finishes of his own.
 
The third set mirrored the first two as it began with both sides exchanging points before NJIT went on a mid-set run that put it in the lead for good. The Terriers battled as Henneberry led the way in the third with five kills, while Vorfi added two, but could not overcome NJIT's lead.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
St. Francis Brooklyn – 0 | NJIT – 3 (19-25, 20-25, 18-25)
  • Henneberry finished the match with a team-high 11 points as he recorded seven kills and four blocks (two solo, two assists), and an ace. The freshman hit a staggering .600 from the middle.
  • Vorfi totaled a team-best eight kills, registered four digs, and two block assists.
  • Freshman outside hitter Johnny Ferraro tallied four kills, while freshman libero Dominick Pikura added four kills and a team-high six digs.
  • Freshman setter Andrew Piloto dished out 21 assists.
