Terriers Earn Split at Stevens Tri-Match

HOBOKEN, NJ – The St. Francis College Brooklyn men's volleyball team (4-9) earned a split on Sunday afternoon at the Stevens tri-match in Hoboken, NJ. The Terriers began the day by knocking off St. Joseph's (LI) in four sets. St. Francis later fell to host institution Stevens in straight sets to close out play for the weekend.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
St. Francis Brooklyn – 3 | St. Joseph's (LI) – 1 (27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20)
  • The Terriers picked up their fourth win of the season by taking down the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles in four sets. It was the second meeting of the season between the teams and St. Francis evened up the season series at 1-1.
  • St. Francis came away with an exciting first set win, 27-25. Neither team was able to pull away in the opening set until the Terriers scored consecutive points to pick up the win. Freshman outside hitter Johnny Ferraro exploded on the scene in the first set for seven kills, while fellow freshman Dominick Pikura added four kills to help the Terriers pick up the first set win.
  • The Terriers overpowered the Golden Eagles in the second set as they picked up a 25-18 victory. After trailing briefly early in the set, 4-3, the Terriers responded by taking control of the match and went on to build a lead of their own. St. Francis was able to build its lead and take the set by capitalizing on errors committed by St. Joseph's. Additionally, Ferraro added three kills, while freshman setter Andrew Piloto dished out six assists.
  • St. Joseph's got on the board in the third set by knocking off the Terriers, 25-19.
  • The Terriers sealed the match in the fourth set by defeating the Golden Eagles by a final margin of 25-20. St. Francis trailed at one point, 14-13, but went on to outscore St. Joseph's, 12-6, down the stretch. Pikura, Ferraro, and freshman middle blocker James Henneberry were the beneficiaries of tremendous sets from Piloto. The setter dished out 14 assists in the set, which led to five kills from Pikura, four kills from Henneberry, and four by Ferraro.
  • Ferraro racked up a career-high 16 kills on .325 hitting. Pikura recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs.
  • Henneberry continued his hot hitting with 10 kills and tallied a hitting percentage of .563.
  • Piloto dished out 42 assists and accounted for 10 digs, while freshman outside hitter Bartlomiej Zielinski registered seven kills and nine digs. Junior libero/setter Derrick Truong finished with 11 digs as he got the start at libero.
St. Francis Brooklyn – 0 | Stevens – 3 (20-25, 15-25, 21-25)
  • Stevens came away with a win in straight sets as it defeated the Terriers 25-20, 25-15, 25-21.
  • The matchup with Stevens marked the first time that Terriers' Head Coach Niko Lambert coached against his alma mater.
  • Ferraro led the Terriers in kills for the second match in a row as he totaled seven and picked up three digs over three sets.
  • Pikura finished with six kills and four digs, while Zielinski added five kills and four block assists.
  • Truong got the start at setter and dished out 20 assists. Junior Michael Basile recorded a season-high 11 digs.

The Terriers are back in action for a pair of matches next Saturday, March 7, when they head to Western New York to face Urbana at 1 p.m., and Daemen at 3 p.m.
