Two Medals Highlight Terriers’ Performance at First Day of NEC Indoor Track Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Northeast Conference (NEC) convened on the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for the NEC's Indoor Track and Field Championships, kicking off two days on competition. The Terriers' men's and women's teams made the short trip across the Verrazano Bridge and started off the weekend with four runners qualifying for the finals on Monday and four jumpers scoring points, including two medals. 

The Terrier women scored 9.5 points, good for eighth place in the standings after day one. The Terrier men sit eighth with eight points. 

Preliminary Races 

  • Renaldo Alleyne-Noriega turned in the best individual performance on the track for the Terriers; qualifying for Monday's 60m Dash final with a second place finish in the prelims. HIs 6.95 time matches a career best. 
  • Angel Okafor will be back on the track Monday after clinching a spot in the 800m Run final. She scored a 2:21.60 finish, a season best for the team and personal best, to take fifth best in the prelims. Lance Hubert (1:58.47) placed 12th in the men's prelim.
  • The Terriers qualified a pair for the women's 200m Dash Final, as Janee' Patterson (5th - 25.74) and Christina Rene (7th - 25.90) advanced after top eight finishes on Sunday. 
  • Alleyne-Noreiga (13th - 22.75) and Shevon Walker (14th - 22.95) clocked top fifteen finishes in the men's 200m prelims. 
  • In his first appearance at the NEC Championships, KyMoy Phillip took tenth with a 1:08.35 finish in the 500m prelim. 
  • Viola Alisch was the Terriers top finisher in the mile prelim, placing 12th with a personal-best 5:33.08 time.

In the lone final race for the Terriers on Sunday, Lara Jacobs crushed her best pace in the 3000m final, shaving 29 seconds off her previous fastest. Her 11:09.75 time was good for a 15th place finish. 

Jump Finals 

  • The Terrier women brought home nine points in the long jump event as Tolulope Atolagbe led the way with her first medal at the indoor conference championships. Her second place finish, peaking out at 5.44m, is a personal best and scored eight points. Beyonce Blake set a new personal best with a 5.19m jump that landed her in eighth place and scored one point for the team. 
  • Malachi Aiken's silver medal performance in the long jump reset the program record he broke at the Big Apple Invitational on Feb. 11, peaking out at 7.23m. His jump earned the Terriers eight points. Xavier Wright placed 12th in the event with a 6.32m best jump.
  • Armani Dunkley scored points in the high jump final for the second consecutive season, earning a half point after finishing tied for eighth with a 1.55m jump.
