GENEVA, OH – St. Francis Brooklyn men's swimming and diving finished day three of the Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday evening. The Terriers were led by Toni Dragoja's gold medal finish in the 200-yard freestyle and sit in third place with two days left.
Dragoja dominated the event, winning by over two seconds to grab 20 team points. His finish was not only a team record, but a meet record. Dragoja completed the race in 1:36.77. Teammates Valentin Schnermann and Daniel Matheus Santos finished in fourth and fifth place respectively (1:39.44 and 1:40.26).
Matthew Bernstein turned in a second-place finish in the 1-meter dive. His score of 207.20 was one of two scores to eclipse the 200-point mark. He bested his prelim score by over 30 points.
Robin Tatar qualified for the "A" finals in the 400-yard IM, taking eighth with a time of 4:12.95. His time of 4:11.62 was good enough for seventh in the prelims. Teammate Victor Fuentes had the third-best time in the "B" final (4:16.78), good enough for 11th.
In the 100-yard butterfly, the Terriers had four swimmers place in the top 16, led by Kamil Goleniec's eighth-place finish. Vladimer Petras and Robert Wagner had the top two times in the "B" final (took ninth and 10th overall) and Homer Olivares rounded out the group, taking 15th.
The day ended with a silver medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Matheus Santos, Luka Dmitrovic, Maurice Grabowski and Dragoja teamed up for a time of 1:20.97. Howard, the lone team to finish ahead of the Terriers, set a meet record in the win.
St. Francis Brooklyn will compete Friday in the penultimate day of the tournament. Prelims will be at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
