RIVERDALE, NY – The St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer team (1-2) dropped its Thursday night contest against Manhattan (3-0), 2-0. After a scoreless and highly contested first half, the Jaspers tallied two goals in the second half en route to the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn and Manhattan traded blows through the first 45 minutes of the contest as they went into the halftime break scoreless. The Terriers attempted two shots in the first half the first by
Ridwan Hannan and the second by
Julien Remiti; both attempts were wide of the net.
Out of the gate in the second half, the Terriers sent a flurry of shots at the net but weren't able to sneak one past Jaspers' goalkeeper Marcellin Gohier. Manhattan would go on to strike first in the 63
rd minute when Troy Carrington was able to find the back of the net on an assist from Milan Devuyst.
Minutes later in the 69
th minute, the Jaspers would tack on their second and final goal of the evening. Berti Fourrier scored after he was setup by Lucas Da Silva.
The Terriers totaled nine shots in the game, five of which were on goal, and they added five corners. Over the first 14 minutes of the second half, the Terriers sent five shots at the net, with a total of four on goal. Gohier robbed
Edoardo Belfanti in the 48th minute, as the Jaspers' goalkeeper dove to his right to make the save.
NOTES FROM THE COACH:
"We made a key mental mistake that cost us two goals; we need to be better at limiting those mistakes. I thought we were a little unlucky tonight. The ball didn't bounce our way; I thought we could've found the back of the net a couple of time. It just wasn't our day," noted head coach
Tom Giovatto on tonight's performance.
"We were connecting pretty well; he (Gohier) was playing well, made good runs, had good movement off the ball. We had a couple of good chances, but he made a couple of good saves, and we were unlucky on a couple of other ones," Giovatto discussed the Terriers' scoring chances at the beginning of the second half.
"We have to keep our heads up. We weren't happy with our performance against Stony Brook (on Monday), and we thought there was improvement tonight. We are a young team, a lot of new faces, so we know that we need to keep on improving everyday. We took a step forward after Stony Brook, and we are going to need to continue to do that. Hopefully, we'll continue to take steps forward and be ready in time for conference play," said Giovatto on what the team needs to do moving forward into their home opener on Sunday.
UP NEXT:
The Terriers take the pitch again on Sunday, September 2, in their 2018 home opener against Cornell.
