Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Central Connecticut State in Return to Brooklyn Bridge Park

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – The St. Francis College Brooklyn men's soccer team (1-1-0, 1-1-0 NEC) defeated Central Connecticut State (0-1-1, 0-1-1 NEC), 1-0, in its return to Brooklyn Bridge Park – Pier 5 on Monday afternoon. Senior midfielder Dennis Coke's goal in the 49th minute proved to be the difference as he broke a scoreless tie en route to the Terriers' first win of the season.

St. Francis and Central Connecticut battled to a scoreless tie in the first half with the Terriers controlling the momentum on the offensive end. St. Francis fired 10 shots on net in the opening half with four of them going on target. The Terriers' defensive prowess was on full display from the opening minutes of play as they limited the Blue Devils to just three shots in the first half.

The Terriers broke through in the 49th minute as Coke found the back of the net, which ended up being the game-winner. Senior forward Nicolas Molina corralled the ball off a throw in and found senior midfielder Ivan Tapuskovic, who left the ball just outside the box with a perfect touch to Coke. Coke buried the one-timer to give St. Francis a 1-0 lead, a score that it would hold on to win by.

St. Francis' defense stood strong all afternoon as the backline of junior defender Harald Sollund, senior defender Ridwan Hannan, senior defender Domenico Pugliese, and sophomore defender Johan Grande-Rojas kept the Blue Devils' offensive attack in check. Sophomore goalkeeper Callum James picked up his first clean sheet of the year as he alongside the Terriers' defense held Central Connecticut without a shot on goal in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Francis Brooklyn – 1 | Central Connecticut State – 0
  • Coke scored the game-winning goal for the Terriers in the 49th minute of play. The goal was Coke's first of the season and the second of his career. The four-year Terrier last found the back of the net against Howard on September 6, 2017, against Howard. Coke's goal against Howard was also the game-winner that day. Coke played the full 90 minutes in the midfield for the Terriers.
  • James earned his first clean sheet of the season in the Terriers' first win. The goalkeeper faced six shots on the afternoon.
  • Tapuskovic earned his first start of the season for the Terriers and dished out his first assist of the year. His touch led to Coke's game-winning goal in the 49th minute. The assist marked the second of his career and the first since September 27, 2019, at Central Connecticut.
  • Molina picked up his first assist of the season as he had the first touch on Coke's goal. The senior notched his second career assist and he has recorded points in back-to-back games for the Terriers (scored a goal at Merrimack on Mar. 1). Molina also attempted three shots in the contest.
  • Junior midfielder Sokol Ymeraj logged a full 90 minutes for the Terriers and attempted two shots, both going on target.
  • St. Francis outshot Central Connecticut, 14-6, in the win.
