BROOKLYN, NY – This past Sunday, the St. Francis College Brooklyn men's basketball team volunteered their time at the 31st annual P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial Run at Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
"It's always an honor to volunteer at the annual Hoban Memorial Run to support a tremendous cause. The Hoban Run is a great event and the organizers do a terrific job. Our guys look forward to this event each year, and it was great to see them serving the community and showing support for the runners. I am proud that we were able to once again have the opportunity to volunteer," said Terriers' head coach
Glenn Braica.
The Hoban Run is a tradition to honor the memory of police officer Chris Hoban, who gave his life in the line of duty at the age of 26 in 1988. The Xaverian High School Police Alumni, New York City Police Department, and members of the community support the Hoban Run.
"As a student-athlete, it is important to give back any way we can, especially in our community. The Hoban Run is always a great way to show our appreciation to those who serve and protect our communities. It was amazing to see so many people volunteering in honor of a great person," noted graduate student
Joshua Nurse.
The event included a 5-mile run, 5K run, and kid's dash that took place following the conclusion of the 5-miler. The Terriers' men's basketball team showed their support for the runners by cheering them on throughout the race. Additionally, the student-athletes greeted each participant with cups of water at the finish line upon completion of the race.
"I think it's important we remind our players it's more than just basketball, it's about service. And what better way to serve our community than honoring someone whose life was committed to serving his. It's a blessing to be able to give our time and service to such a great event. We look forward to helping out for years to come," added assistant coach
Jamaal Womack.
Proceeds from the run are donated to a scholarship fund at Xaverian High School. The Hoban Scholarship provides tuition assistance to the children of NYPD Officers attending Xaverian High School.
