BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - On Monday afternoon, the St. Francis Brooklyn men's basketball team welcomed rival LIU, as the Sharks crossed Flatbush Avenue to travel to Remsen Street for the first time this season.
Despite finding success from three-point range, the Terriers were outmatched in the paint. SFBK (4-13, 1-5 NEC) fell to LIU (7-9, 4-2 NEC), 80-65.
Larry Moreno led the Terriers in scoring with 13 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LIU scored the first five points of the game, with Bahaïde Haïdara getting the Terriers on the board with 17:28 to play. The Sharks played with a lead for nearly eight minutes to open the first half, but a three-pointer by
Rob Higgins with 12:13 to play gave the Terriers the first lead of the game, 14-12, with 12:13 to go.
Both teams traded baskets over the following minutes as the lead changed four times. The home team took its final lead of the first half with 7:32 remaining, on a three point basket by
Jack Hemphill. The Sharks cemented their advantage with a 19-6 run heading in to the final minutes of the first half.
Larry Moreno broke the run 1:05 to play, cutting the LIU lead at halftime to 40-33.
Tedrick Wilcox Jr. got the Terriers within four points when he splashed a three for the opening points of the second half. LIU again shot back with an 8-3 to extend their back to as many as nine with 14:34 to play. As the Sharks found their footing in the post, their lead ballooned to as many as 14 in the middle stretch of the half.
The Terriers looked to respond with the three ball, going 7-18 from beyond the arc in the second half, but LIU's 20-8 advantage in the paint, served to be too much. The Terriers ultimately fell, 80-65.
TEAM LEADERS
Larry Moreno made his most field goals in a single game this season, going 5-7 from the field, on his way to 13 points.
Tedrick Wilcox Jr. led the Terriers with eight boards, adding six points and a steal.
Jack Hemphill finished with season-highs in multiple categories on Monday. His three made three-pointers on eight attempts was his most in a game as a Terrier - finishing with 11 points and a season-high five rebounds.
Trey Quartlebaum knocked down his most three-pointers in a game this season, scoring 11 points (4-9 FG, 3-7 3PT).
