BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer head coach
Tom Giovatto has announced the additions of assistant coaches
Alessio Cannata and
Hector Guerrero to his 2018 coaching staff.
"Alessio is a great coach, great person, he's a local Brooklyn guy and knows a lot of the youth teams around here. He'll be a great asset to us, he is a hard-working coach, and we appreciate that he's here. Hector's an outstanding goalkeepers coach, he played professionally for the Cosmos and brought a great deal of experience and knowledge to the team. We're truly excited to have him as part of the staff," notes Giovatto on the additions of Cannata and Guerrero.
Cannata brings 12 years of coaching experience to St. Francis Brooklyn. He currently serves as the head coach of the Brooklyn Italians U-15 boys' team, a post that he has held since 2009.
Cannata was born in Palermo, Italy, at 13 years old, he and his family moved to the United States and since then has been part of the Brooklyn Italians; first, as player and then as a coach. He has also held several other coaching roles in the Brooklyn Italians organization. Cannata spent time as an assistant coach of the men's team that plays in the National Premier Soccer League (2011-12). He was the head coach of the men's reserve team (2009-10) and an assistant coach of the U16-18 boys' team (2005-09). His first role in the coaching industry came as an assistant of the junior varsity team at Xaverian High School In Brooklyn (2005-07).
"Alessio is going to bring a significant amount of knowledge to attacking; he enjoys working with the attacking players. He's going to bring a great deal to the table with the guys' personalities as well. He is very good at handling personalities, and he's going to be somebody that the team can rely on to speak to here, which is an essential part of the job," said Giovatto.
Guerrero, an accomplished goalkeeper, will serve as the Terriers' goalkeepers' coach. He joins the staff after playing professionally for the New York Cosmos B team of the National Premier Soccer League. Guerrero served as the starting goalkeeper for Cosmos' reserve team from 2016-17.
Before playing professionally, Guerrero was a member of the Briarcliffe College men's soccer team (2011-13). He then played at Pennsylvania College of Technology in 2014. During his collegiate career, he was named to the USCAA All-American First Team (2014) and was an All-Conference First Team member (2013).
"Hector is going to help our goalkeepers develop technically and tactically. He brings great experience of playing professionally here with the Cosmos and also in Mexico. All of the goalkeepers are aspiring to be professional athletes, and they are going to be working with a professional athlete, it doesn't get better than that. I think they're going to be thrilled to work with him," added Giovatto.
