Wednesday, February 6, 2019, marks the 33rd Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).
The national celebration; powered by the Women's Sports Foundation, has empowered girls and women to get moving and recognize how sports help them push past their limits in their fields of competition and life. "Lead Her Forward," the theme for this year's celebration honors the many ways that sports push girls and women to achieve excellence and realize their boundless potential in their communities and beyond.
The St. Francis Brooklyn Athletic Department and Women's Leadership Network at St. Francis College are excited to co-host a POWER Breakfast; featuring two trailblazing athletic alumni.
We are honored to have Dr. MaryIrene Flynn ('81), and
Irma Garcia ('80) host a discussion in which they share their stories of how being involved in sports have provided opportunities, barriers and the tools to overcome them throughout their lives.
From teammates on the Women's Basketball team at St. Francis to leaders in their respective professional careers, both Flynn and Garcia stand out as true trailblazers who indeed; Lead Her Forward.
As St. Francis celebrates two milestone anniversaries, the 160th anniversary of the college and 50 years of educating women, we are excited to announce this event that pays homage to the College's rich history and the achievements of our female student-athletes. The event will be held on NGWSD, Wednesday, February 6, from 8-9:30 a.m. on the campus of St. Francis College.
Dr. MaryIrene Flynn '81 played basketball and volleyball while at SFC. She is currently an orthopedic surgeon in Staten Island, NY and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital. She has her practice and often encourages SFC students to visit her office and shadow her in the field to learn more about sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Flynn received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and has been in practice for more than 20 years. She is one of 17 doctors at Richmond Hill University Medical Center and one of 16 at Staten Island University Hospital who specialize in Orthopedic Surgery.
Irma Garcia '80 has been known and revered as a trailblazer in college athletics through 38 years in sports. Garcia was named St. Francis' Director of Athletics in 2007 and became the first Latina to lead a NCAA Division I athletics department and is one of only a few women to head a Division I program. Garcia's leadership, compassion, and dedication to sports and St. Francis College have set the stage for her to oversee 21 programs as the college's Director of Athletics. Throughout her life as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator, Garcia has touched and inspired many and dedicated much of her time to ensure that young women have the resources and opportunities to blaze their trails. A recipient of numerous awards and a member of the St. Francis Athletic Hall of Fame, Garcia is involved in countless national and local organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
