Brooklyn Heights, NY- As the Terriers prepare to take on Princeton this afternoon for Alumni Day, they look to build off of this past week's 3 consecutive victories.
Men's Water Polo Team Weekly Wrap Up:
This past week has been quite successful for the young Terrier water polo squad posting two home wins and one away victory over Northeast conference rivals this past week. Here is the happy recap.
Saturday 10/2 VS MIT
In the friendly confines of 180 Remsen Street the Terriers first opponent of the day was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology "Beavers". Right from the start this turned out to be a lopsided affair with the Terriers taking a commanding 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The St. Francis squad never looked back from that point finishing the game with a 25-7 advantage. The Terriers scoring was led by Adonis Vlassis , Baptiste Oliveri & Leonidas Athanasoulias with four goals apiece. Aleksa Sisakovic recorded a game high five assists. In the nets all four goalies played a stanza with Manuel Diaz posting four saves, two steals and three assists.
Saturday 10/2 VS Harvard
When Harvard and St. Francis meet it is always a hotly contested contest and this game did not disappoint the overflow crowd at the St. Francis Aquatic center. The first quarter ended in a draw with each team scoring twice as both teams were settling into the flow of the game This feeling out process didn't last long as the game became quite intense starting the second quarter. The Crimson and Terriers traded goals through the stanza with the game remaining tied at the half. Both teams were having difficulty staying in the game as the referees were ejecting players seemingly on each possession. It clearly seemed that this game would be determined by the team with the better six on five percentage. Although Harvard had the most advantage opportunities it was the Terriers that defended the Crimson advantage well enough to survive the contest. In the end the Terriers defeated the #15 ranked Crimson by a score of 12 to 10.
In this contest, Baptiste Oliveri led all scorers with four tallies and five steals, Dominik Hevesi also had a huge offensive game with three goals and three steals. On defense goalie Manuel Diez played all four quarters of the match notching fourteen saves and he also had two steals.
Wednesday 10/6 VS Iona College
On Wednesday evening the Terriers traveled to New Rochelle for a single conference game versus the Gaels of Iona. Playing at Iona always proves to be difficult, due to the tremendous fan support the Gaels receive and the small confines of the arena. Coach Ilija Djuretic had the team prepared and ready to play as indicated by the 6-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Terriers continued to extend their lead, doubling the Gaels' score by halftime 10-5. In the end it was the Terriers that prevailed in this rival game by a score of 25-10. Despite losing the ejection battle (24-10), clearly it was the St Francis man down defense and goalie play that made the difference in this contest.
The offensive leader for the Terriers was Dominik Hevesi with seven goals, three assists and he defensively caused three turnovers. Defensively in goal for St Francis, Djordje Stoljkovic blocked seven Iona shots and had three assists in three quarters of play. Branislav Petrovic played just the fourth quarter but had a game high four assists and two saves.
Next up for The St. Francis Terriers are The Tigers of Princeton for a late Saturday afternoon contest on Alumni weekend at The SFC Aquatic Center.
