Men' Soccer Opens up NEC Play With Victory Over Howard

Washington, D.C. -

The St. Francis College Men's Soccer team (3-3-1, 1-0-0) opened up Northeast Conference Play in the Nation's Capital on Sunday afternoon as they squared off with Howard University (1-3-2, 0-1-0).

The defending Northeast Conference Champions looked to build momentum to carry them through the remainder of their regular season on Sunday afternoon. The squad received their 2021 Conference Championship rings and NCAA awards on the campus of St. Francis College on Friday afternoon, just in time to remind them of the exciting end to their 2021 season.

As the whistle blew in Washington DC this afternoon the Terriers jumped onto the attack right away. St. Francis saw a corner kick within the first 90 seconds of play, followed by a second 2' later. They tallied the first two shots of the game, both before the ten minute mark.

Things started to heat up around the 30' where the game saw 3 yellow cards given out. Vincent Turk and Peter Gansollo were booked for the Bison and Jaydon Humphries saw the yellow for the Terriers.

The first half box score saw Howard with 5 shots to the Terriers 7 with none finding the back of the net.

With the second half starting at 0-0, the Terriers held steady on the attack and saw a corner kick and 2 shots in the first 10'.

After a plethora of substitutions for both squads, Howard saw their best attempt of the contest as Abdulla Aljirafi saw the ball knick the crossbar in the 74'.

The lone goal of the game came for the Terriers in the 83' when El Mahdi Youssoufi ended up netting the game winner off a beautiful assist from teammate Badr Mesrar. Harald Sollund came close to giving the Terriers a 2-0 lead 4' later, but the back line of Howard connected to keep the game 1-0.

A final yellow card was given to Badr Mesrar of the Terriers in the 88' but St. Francis hung on to earn the victory.

The Terriers return home on Thursday, September 30th when they host the Bryant Bulldogs at 3pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The game will be livestreamed on NEC Front Row.
