Director of Athletics Garcia Set to Receive MBWA’s Distinguished Service Award

NEW YORK, N.Y. - In recognition of a lifetime of service to St. Francis College Athletics and its community,  Director of Athletics Irma Garcia '80, is set to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) at this year's All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner.

This honor adds to an ongoing list of recognitions she has received during her tenure at her alma mater, including NACDA/Under Armour AD of the Year in 2015-16 and receiving two Division I Administrator of the Year awards in 2015 from the ECAC and Women Leaders in College Sports (formerly NACWAA), respectively.

This award is in recognition of her tireless work as the Terriers' Director of Athletics throughout her 16-year tenure and her prior success at the helm of the St. Francis women's basketball program.

Under her direction, St. Francis Brooklyn has continued to expand, adding men's volleyball and women's soccer beginning in the 2019-20 season. The Terriers have won 17 regular season or conference tournament championships during that time and sent 11 teams to national postseason play, including the Terrier women's basketball team's first trip to the NCAA tournament in 2015. St. Francis has also produced more than 40 professional athletes during that time.

In addition to athletic success, academics have remained a priority under Garcia, with the women's basketball team and men's golf team winning Academic National Championships under her watch.

Garcia is the 60th individual to receive the Distinguished Service Award since its inception in 1994. She will be given the honor as part of the MBWA's annual All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner, scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 27, at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, N.Y.
