Micah Acoba enters his fourth year as the head coach of the women's volleyball program.  Acoba assumed the helm in May 2010, and six months later, the program had its winningest season in nine years and its best conference record in 16 years.

During Acoba's inaugural season, the program also exhibited individual player development as Anisa Lila (’11) became its first All-Conference honoree in ten years.  Lila led the Northeast Conference in kills per game and total kills and had the best hitting percentage of all outside hitters in the conference.

Acoba began his volleyball coaching career as head coach of the men’s club team at Tufts University for the 1996 season.  He then became the head coach of the Cornell University men’s club team during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, leading the Big Red to a perfect conference record during that span and victories over varsity and nationally-ranked club programs.  In 2000, Acoba served as the assistant coach of the varsity men’s team at Hunter College, helping the squad reach the conference semifinals.

From 2000-2004, he was the head coach of the United East Athletics Association women’s club team, advancing to the playoffs each tournament, garnering one tournament title.  Acoba served as the assistant coach of the varsity men’s team at Baruch College during the 2009 season, helping Baruch to its highest national ranking in history at that time and its most wins ever.  Acoba then became the head coach of the varsity women’s team at John Jay College in 2009 where the team qualified for the conference playoffs despite losing three starters – a co-captain, the prior year’s Most Improved Player, and the prior year’s all-conference honoree.

During 2009-2011, Acoba was an assistant coach for the Seward Park Campus varsity boys’ team, ranked in the Top 10 in the New York Public School Athletic League in all three seasons.  For the 2010-2011 girls’ club volleyball seasons, Acoba coached the 18’s team of the Starlings Volleyball Club in New York City.

During his coaching career, Acoba has helped prepare a player for a professional career in Europe, and he has coached and advised another player who was inducted into the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Hall of Fame and who became a three-time Coach of the Year.

Acoba is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii.  He graduated from Iolani School where he was a member of the boys’ volleyball team as well as the boys’ basketball, baseball, and track teams.

Acoba received his bachelor of arts in English and American Literature from Harvard University in 1994.  At Harvard, he played setter and outside hitter for the Division I varsity men’s volleyball team and was a member of the team that won the 1993 Ivy League championship.

Acoba also attended Cornell Law School where he received his juris doctor in 1999.

In his free time, Acoba plays beach volleyball recreationally.  He competed in one full season of beach volleyball in 2004, finishing in the Top 5 (and tied for first in the Northeast) in the East End Volleyball Men’s AA Grand Prix.

Acoba resides in New York City.
