BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - One week after a battle with America East preseason favorite Stony Brook that came down to the final minutes, the St. Francis Brooklyn women's basketball team is back on the road, with its sights set on Baltimore County. The Terriers are set to face fellow America East member, UMBC, Sunday at 1 p.m.
The two are facing off for the first time since Jan. 23, 2003, the last season the Retrievers competed as members of the Northeast Conference. The Terriers will look for their first win over UMBC since Feb. 11, 1999, and their first at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena, the Retrievers' arena completed in 2018.
LAST TIME OUT
Stony Brook 71 | SFBK 64: The Terriers, even without leading scorer Fruszina Horvath, went toe-to-toe with the preseason America East conference favorite Seawolves. Despite taking the lead twice in the second half, a win was just out of reach for St. Francis Brooklyn, as the Terriers dropped their first game in their last three. Junior guard Nevena Dimitrijevic paced the Terriers with a season-high 18 points, shooting 50% from three-point range. Alyssa Fisher and Khaleah Edwards each added 11 points of their own. The loss was the first for SFBK since the program's historic victory over Michigan State.
American 55 | UMBC 47: UMBC ended its five-game road swing with a tough 55-47 loss at American. The Retrievers held the host Eagles to a single 3-point field goal in 20 attempts, but could not overcome 25 turnovers at Bender Arena. Graduate student Onome-Juliet Esadah led the visitors with 14 points. Graduate student Danae Marquez who scored eight points, hit a pair of treys and keyed a late UMBC rally which cut a 10-point deficit to 51-47 with 3:38 remaining. UMBC is still in search of its first win over a Division I opponent this season.
Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. and match-up between the Terriers and the Retrievers can be streamed through ESPN+ in the United States and on America East TV for international viewers.
