Men's Hoops Falls At First-Place Wagner, 79-61

Staten Island, NY - - -The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers were defeated by the Northeast Conference leading Wagner Seahawks, 79-61, on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.  The Terriers fell to 10-14 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast Conference while the hosts improved to 17-6 (10-2 NEC).

Freshman guard Chauncey Hawkins paced the Terriers with 18 points,16 of which came in the second stanza.  Junior guard Glenn Sanabria (12 points) and sophomore guard Rasheem Dunn (10 points, 9 rebounds) were also in double-digits.

Wagner, who improved to 11-0 on their home court, led from nearly start to finish to win their sixth straight contest.  The Seahawks jumped out to a 14-4 lead at the 14:11 mark as they scored 10 consecutive points after Dunn had evened the game at 4-4 with a layup early in the contest.

St. Francis Brooklyn senior forward Gunnar Olafsson came off the bench to score back-to-back buckets, cutting the deficit to six but the hosts scored the next five points to push the lead back to double-digits at 19-8.

The Seahawks took their biggest lead of the opening half, 29-17, with 4:48 remaining after a layup by Romone Saunders.  The Terriers responded with five straight as they made 5-of-6 free throws to close within 29-22 with 2:36 left before the break but Wagner scored the final four points to claim a 33-22 lead at the half.

The Seahawks opened the second half on a 9-3 run to extend their lead to 42-25 with 15:30 left.  The Terriers managed to close within 56-43 with 8:24 remaining after freshman guard Jalen Jordan picked off an inbounds pass and glided in for a layup, however, Wagner rattled off eight straight points to put the game away at 64-43 at the 6:55 mark.

St. Francis Brooklyn, who is now in a three-way tie for third-place, will return home on Thursday evening against Robert Morris at 7:00 p.m.
